Project Location: Town of Newbury in Orange County on Boltonville Road (Town Highway 3) over Wells River. The bridge is located approximately 500 feet north of the junction of Boltonville Road and US Route 302.

The Newbury Bridge 15 project includes a superstructure replacement including new bridge joints. The existing structure is a 113-foot long 2-Span Rolled Beam Bridge constructed in 1946. The structure currently has a deck rating of 5 (fair), a superstructure rating of 5 (fair), and a substructure rating of 6 (satisfactory).

VTrans evaluated alternatives for rehabilitation or replacement of the bridge in an engineering study completed in May, 2019. This study assessed the proposed design criteria for the structure, right-of-way, rare/threatened/endangered species impacts, hydraulics, and historic impacts. Several alternatives were considered, including: no action, superstructure replacement, and full bridge replacement. The scoping report evaluated an offsite detour or a temporary bridge for maintenance of traffic.

Given the age of the structure, site constraints and current conditions, the engineering study recommended a superstructure replacement with traffic maintained on an offsite detour for 60 days.  The new superstructure will protect the substructure from further deterioration due to chlorides.  

The bridge will be constructed during the summer of 2021.
