HUNTINGTON BRIDGE BR#32

BO 1445(38) Huntington

Replacement of BR32 on TH22 over Brush Brook, with related approach and channel work.

Project Location: Town of Huntington in Chittenden County on Camel's Hump Road (Town Highway 22) over Brush Brook. The bridge is located approximately 1.5 miles east of the intersection with TH-1, Main Road, in the Town of Huntington.

The Huntington Bridge 32 project includes the replacement of the existing single span timber deck on rolled beam bridge. The existing structure has a span of 37-feet and a width of 16.2-feet. The structure currently has a deck rating of 6 (satisfactory), a superstructure rating of 5 (fair), and a substructure rating of 5 (fair).  The bridge was constructed in 1925 and reconstructed in 1990 and is 45-feet in length. The bridge is considered structually deficient and has temporary shoring at the mid-span.

VTrans evaluated alternatives for rehabilitation or replacement of the bridge in an engineering study completed in January, 2019. This study assessed the proposed design criteria for the structure, right-of-way, rare/threatened/endangered species impacts, hydraulics, and resource impacts. Several alternatives were considered, including: no action, superstructure replacement, and full bridge replacement on and off-alighnment. Maintenance of traffic options considered included the existing bridge for the off-alignment option or a temporary bridge.  An offsite detour was not considered since Camel's Hump Road is a dead end road.

Given the age of the structure, site constraints and current conditions, the engineering study recommended a full bridge replacement with a new shallow foundation bridge on-alignment while maintaining traffic on a downstream temporary bridge.  The proposed typical section would include two 9-foot travel lanes with 2-foot shoulders matching the corridor, for a total width of 22-feet.

It is anticipated that the bridge will be constructed during the summer of 2022.

Traffic will be maintained on a single-lane temporary bridge during construction.
