NEWPORT CITY VT-191

STP 134-3(22) Newport City

STABILIZATION OF A LARGE SIDESLOPE ALONG VT191 IN NEWPORT CITY, BEGINNING 0.25 MILE EAST OF THE DERBY-NEWPORT TOWN LINE AND EXTENDING EASTERLY 0.30 MILE.

Project is located at Milemarker 0.275 on VT Route 191 and extends approximately 1,450 feet.  The project consists of remediating slope failures that have been affecting the roadway since the road was originally constructed in 1971.  Subsurface investigations concluded that that groundwater pressures 120 below the ground surface is causing soil migration which is causing the failure and settlement within the roadway.  To alleviate this pressure, three(3) active wells will be installed to extract water from below the surface.

In addition, the project will include full-depth reconstruction of the roadway within the settlement area and replacement of a failed culvert that is approximately 30 feet below the roadway surface.

A six(6) week roadway closure period is proposed between June 24, 2019 and August 23, 2019 to facilitate the deep excavation necessary to install the proposed culvert.  Traffic will be diverted using US Route 5 and Interstate 91.
