NORTHFIELD VT-12

ER P23-1(677) Northfield

Replacement of retaining wall on VT 12 Northfield MM 1.261 due to VT23-1. DDIR-D6-VT 12-Northfield 1.25-1.9.

The Northfield ER P23-1(677) project is located in the Town of Northfield, along Vt Route 12, between mile marker 1.25 and mile marker 1.90. The project involves the replacement of two sections of retaining wall (failed and original), located outside of the bridge area, with a new scour resistant retaining wall. This option will extend the design life of the structure up to 75 years, and mitigate the potentiality of a failure due to scour. The existing retaining wall is laid up stone blocks. The wall starts at the abutment of an old bridge which no longer has a superstructure. It runs parallel to the brook for approximately 250 feet. A portion of the retaining wall is mortared together, starting approximately 200 feet from the old abutments. The retaining wall has failed in two locations, the first being just before the mortared section of wall, and the second being just after the concrete faced wall.

Maintenance of Traffic will be performed on the existing roadway utilizing a one lane closure with temporary traffic lights to facilitate two way alternating traffic. There are numerous driveways in the limits of the project, all of which will have Driveway Assistance Devices.
