Bridge 116 (BR116) was demolished by the July 2023 rain event. A temporary bridge was installed on-alignment and will remain in service until BR116 is replaced. Due to a bend in Madden Brook, upstream of BR116, the brook’s flow jumped its banks. A temporary drainage relief culvert was installed during the emergency response to provide an alternate route for water to travel. The temporary drainage relief culvert will be removed during the construction of the new bridge.

A sediment source exists upstream of BR116 that will transport large amounts sediment through the project area during large storm events similar to the August 2011 Hurricane Irene and the July 2023 rain event.    In development of a resilient solution the design team performed sediment transport analysis and hydraulic analysis. After coordination with Agency of Natural Resources - River Management Engineer(ANR-RME), the design team concluded the most resilient solution for this site includes the installation of a 60' +/- span bridge with a moderate skew so the channel flows naturally through the structure. The vertical profile of VT-100 will be raised approximately 1-foot to provide adequate area to pass sediment and hydraulic flow. The extent of channel work up/down stream of BR116 will be determined during design with continued coordination with stakeholders.
