Hartland BRIDGE BR#22
BO CVBR(2) Hartland
Rehabilitation of Bridge #22 on TH 15 in Hartland.
Project Location: Town of Hartland in Windsor County on TH 15 (Mill Street) over the Ottauquechee River roughly 0.5 miles northeast of the intersection with US-5.
This project involves the rehabilitation of Bridge 22 (Willard Covered Bridge). The bridge is a single span town lattice covered bridge owned by the Town of Hartland. The bridge is 130 feet long. The deck is rated a 6 (satisfactory condition), the superstructure is rated a 6 (satisfactory condition), and the substructure is rated a 7 (good condition). Some parts of the bridge are in good condition but will need to be replaced in order to access the more deteriorated parts of the bridge.
Though the bridge deck, superstructure, and substructure are all rated a 6 or better overall, many individual components of the bridge are expected to deteriorate at a rate that prohibits a No Action alternative. Due to the bridge's historic nature, it cannot be replaced with federal funding. Several different options for bridge rehabilitation were considered. The Town of Hartland has chosen to move forward with a bridge rehabilitation designed to increase the bridge's capacity to enable it to carry an H-12 design vehicle. Construction is expected to begin in 2030 and last for one construction season.
Traffic will be maintained on an offsite detour. 0.3 miles of Legal Trail on the detour route will be improved to the level of a Class 3 Town Highway.
