MONTPELIER-WATERBURY I-89

IM 089-2(56) Montpelier

Resurfacing I89 SB from Montpelier 52.5 to Waterbury MM 63. Includes ramps and facilities.

Project Location:  Beginning in the Town of Berlin at MM 52.580 (at the bridge which spans VT Route 12) and extending motherly along the I-89 southbound barrel for a distance of 55,015.000 feet (10.420 miles) to mile marker MM 63.000  in the Town of Waterbury (to a point just south of the Exit 10 interchange).  The project also includes the on and off ramps associated with the Exit 8 (Montpelier) and Exit 9 (Middlesex) interchanges.

Project Scope:  Work to be performed under this project includes 5" depth of coarse-milling (full width) which also entails geometric improvements to the roadway cross-slope (banking).  Following the milling the operation, the roadway will receive three consecutive lifts of pavement ranging from 1" to 2-1/4" in depth.  The work will require minor grading and excavation work along the edges of pavement and within the areas of the roadway shoulders.  Guardrail and drainage improvements are also part of the scope of work.

Project Timeline:  It is anticipated this project will be active for two consecutive construction seasons (2025 and 2026).  Work will likely begin in the spring months of 2025.

Traffic Impacts:  It is anticipated that this project will require lane closures which will extend for multiple miles during day time hours.  Because of this, it is expected that traffic will be heavily impacted during the morning and afternoon peak hours.  It is suggested and encouraged for motorists to use other routes similar to US Route 2.
