POULTNEY BRIDGE BR#4

BF 0145(13) Poultney

Project is for rehabilitation of truss Bridge #4 on VT 31 which crosses the Poultney River.

Project Location: Located on TH 1 (South St.) over the Poultney River in the Town of Poultney, approximately 0.17 miles south of the intersection with TH 7 (Bentley Ave.).

The Poultney Bridge No. 4 project includes the rehabilitation of the existing truss superstructure and replacement of the bridge abutments.  The existing structure is a 126' long Pratt through truss that was constructed in 1923 and was rehabilitated in 1975.

Bridge No. 4 is listed in the National Register of Historic Places and is one of the few remaining pre-1927 truss bridges remaining in Vermont; the November 1927 flood destroyed many of the pre-1927 truss bridges and other pre-1927 truss bridges have since been replaced.

VTrans evaluated alternatives to address the existing condition, structural deficiencies, and insufficient load capacity of Bridge No. 4 in an engineering study completed in 2023.  This study assessed the design criteria for the crossing, right-of-way, roadway geometry, constructability, future maintenance, historic preservation requirements, and overall safety of the crossing for vehicles, pedestrians, and bicyclists.  Multiple alternatives were considered, including: no action, bridge rehabilitation, on-alignment bridge replacement, and off-alignment bridge replacement.  Maintenance of traffic options considered included an off-site detour, temporary bridge, and phased construction.  The engineering study recommended bridge rehabilitation with substructure replacement and traffic maintained on a one-lane temporary bridge controlled by temporary traffic signals.
