LUNENBURG BRIDGE BR#123

BF 028-4(34) Lunenburg

Scoping to evaluate alternatives for bridge no. 123 located under US-2 in Lunenburg carrying Neal Brook.

Project Location: Bridge 123 is in the Town of Lunenburg in Essex County on US 2 over Neal Brook. Bridge 123 is state owned, and is located approximately 5.7 miles west of the junction with VT 102.

The Lunenburg Bridge 123 project includes the rehabilition of the existing stone arch structure. Bridge 123 was built in 1917, has a span of 12 feet, and is 28 feet long. There is an average of 2 feet of fill over the culvert. The structure currently has a culvert rating of 4 (Poor), and a channel rating of 5 (Fair).

VTrans evaluated alternatives for the rehabilitation or replacement of the bridge in an engineering study completed in July of 2022. This study assessed the proposed design criteria for the structure, right-of-way, hydraulics, rare/threatened/endangered species impacts, and cultural resource impacts. Several alternatives were considered, including: no action, arch rehabilitation, and full bridge replacement. Maintenance of traffic options considered included an offsite detour or a temporary bridge.

Given the age of the structure, site constraints and current conditions, the engineering study recommended a rehabilitation of the existing stone arch in order to maintain historic integrity.  A one way alternating temporary bridge will be constructed on the south side of US Route 2.

It is anticipated that the arch rehabilitation will take place during the summer of 2026.

A one way alternating temporary bridge will be constructed on the south side of US Route 2.
