MARLBORO-BRATTLEBORO VT-9
NH 010-1(57) Marlboro
The project will reduce damage from potential floods at five specific locations along VT 9 starting at approximately MM 8.0 in Marlboro to MM 3.5 in Brattleboro. Improvements include armoring and constructing flood shelves along the road bank, creating access to a floodplain to reduce stream power, and realigning the river channel to improve flow through an existing bridge.
Project Location: The project contains five sites along VT-9 where the Whetstone Brook runs parallel or crosses the road. The separate sites begin at the Marlboro Collision Center at the western extent and terminate with the final site at the bridge over the brook, east of Westgate Drive on VT-9.
Project Description: Work will consist of armoring the bank of the stream where it parallels VT-9. This armoring will be completed using large concrete blocks lower in the stream bank and large stone rip rap as the slope continues up to the roadway. In addition, there will be some creations of flood benches at two sites to allow the river to overrun the banks in major flooding events within an expected plain, reducing the stream velocity and its erosive potential. In areas where work is to take place from the roadway, milling and paving will be completed to maintain and repair the roadway surface.
