The existing 162 foot long, 8-foot-wide Corrugated Galvanized Metal Plate Pipe Arch (CGMPPA) is in satisfactory condition; however, the invert is in poor condition. The invert has heavy corrosion present with large perforations throughout causing piping and voiding. The remaining structure invert has heavy pitting and rust scaling throughout. This bridge was constructed in 1978.

Given the age of the structure and current condition, the engineering study recommended a full replacement with a precast concrete box culvert.

This project will require a 14-day maximum closure period on U.S. Route 7 to replace the existing culvert with a new precast concrete box culvert, while maintaining traffic on an offsite detour via Vermont Route 7A and Vermont Route 313 in Bennington, Shaftsbury, and Arlington. The Sunderland NH CULV(122) culvert replacement (Bridge 19-7) project, which is bundled with this project, will be constructed during the same period so that only one closure is needed.

During the closure period, superload detours will be coordinated with Vermont and New York Department of Motor Vehicles based on superload origins and destinations due to height limitation on VT 313. The exact dates for the 14 day closure will be determined by the contractor. The closure is tentatively scheduled to start at 7 a.m. on Saturday, September 19, and continue 24/7 until 7 a.m. on Saturday, October 3.
