CLARENDON BRIDGE BR#28

BO 1443(55) Clarendon

Rehabilitation of bridge no. 28 (Kingsley town lattice covered bridge) on TH-39 in Clarendon crossing the Mill River.

Project Location: Town of Clarendon in Rutland County on Town Highway 39 (East Street) over Mill River. The bridge is located just south of the intersection of East Street and Gorge Road.

The Clarendon 28 project includes the rehabilitation of the existing Single Span Town Lattice Covered Bridge. The existing bridge was built in 1836 and rehabilitated in 1949 and 1987 and is 121-feet long.  The structure currently has a deck rating of 7 (good), superstructure rating of 5 (fair), and substructure rating of 7 (good).

Hoyle, Tanner, and Associates evaluated alternatives for rehabilitation of the bridge in an engineering study completed in January of 2021. This study assessed the proposed design criteria for the structure, right-of-way, historic impacts, and archaeological resource impacts. Several alternatives were considered, including: no action, rehabilitation to the existing 3T rating, and rehabilitation to a 12T, 15T, and 20T rating.

The project will be under construction and the bridge will be closed starting in the spring of 2023 through February 2024.

The bridge will be closed during rehabilitation of the structure.
