Replace Bridge No. 60 on VT-12 in Northfield Village crossing the Dog River.
Project Location: Town of Northfield in Washington County on VT Route 12 over Dog River. The bridge is located approximately 1.1 miles north of the junction with VT Route 12A South.
The Northfield Bridge 60 project includes the replacement of the existing 3-Span concrete T-Beam bridge. The existing structure has a length of 111-feet and a width of 55-feet. The structure currently has a deck rating of 5 (fair), a superstructure rating of 4 (poor), and a substructure rating of 5 (fair). This bridge was constructed in 1926 and was reconstructed in 1958. The reinforced concrete T-Beams are in fair to poor condition having areas of heavy saturation, efflorescence leakage, rust staining, and spalling.
VTrans evaluated alternatives for rehabilitation or replacement of the bridge in an engineering study completed in February 2020. Given the age of the structure, site constraints and current conditions, the engineering study recommended a full bridge replacement with traffic maintained on an offsite detour.
It is anticipated that the bridge will be constructed during the summer of 2025.
Traffic will be maintained on an offsite detour for 12 weeks.
Regional Truck Detour Route: VT Route 12 (Main Street), to VT Route 64, to Interstate 89, to Exit 8 Montpelier, to VT Route 12. (Turning movements have been analyzed in Depot Sq. to assure local deliveries can be accomplished)
Local Passenger Car Detour Route: VT Route 12 (Main Street), to Water Street, and Wall Street back to VT Route 12 (Main Street) (0.8 mi end-to-end)

Closures:
- VT-12 will be closed at Bridge BR#60 over DOG RIVER for 12 weeks between June 1, 2026 and August 24, 2026.
