WOLCOTT BRIDGE BR#6

BO 1446(38) Wolcott

Replace BR6 on TH-3 in Wolcott crossing the Lamoille River.

Project Location: Town of Wolcott in Lamoille County on Town Highway 3 (School Street) over Lamoille River. The bridge is located just south of the intersection with VT Route 15.

The Wolcott bridge 6 project includes the replacement of the existing Parker Pony Truss. The existing bridge was built in 1928 and is 105-feet long. The bridge was closed to traffic in 2018 and a temporary bridge was placed on top of the existing pony truss. During the annual inspection, it was discovered that the gusset connection, located at the bottom chord end of abutment #1 upstream bearing, had deteriorated to the point where it completely cracked through with some deformation seen.

VTrans evaluated alternatives for rehabilitation or replacement of the bridge in an engineering study completed in October, 2021. This study assessed the proposed design criteria for the structure, right-of-way, historic impacts, hydraulics and archaeological resource impacts. Several alternatives were considered, including: no action, rehabilitation, a new steel beam bridge on and off-alignment, and a new pony truss on and off-alignment. The scoping report recommends a full bridge replacement with a new pony truss constructed on an improved alignment.

Traffic will be maintained on an offsite detour during construction.
