ROCKINGHAM BRIDGE BR#6

NH CULV(66) Rockingham

REPLACEMENT OF BRIDGE NO. 6 (CULVERT) CARRYING BROOK ON VT-103 IN ROCKINGHAM.

Project Location: Town of Rockingham in Windham County on VT Route 103, approximately 3.6 miles south of the junction with VT Route 11.

The Rockingham Bridge 6 project includes the rehabilitaion of the existing culvert.  The existing structure is a 10-foot span Corrugated Galvanized Metal Plate Pipe (CGMPP) constructed in 1962. The culvert is 222-feet long and under 40-feet of fill. The structure currently has a culvert rating of 4 (poor).

VTrans evaluated alternatives for rehabilitation or replacement of the culvert in an engineering study completed in September of 2021. This study assessed the proposed design criteria for the structure, right-of-way, hydraulics, and fisheries impacts. Several alternatives were considered, including: no action, culvert liner, and full bridge replacement with a new percast box or a new conventional bridge. The scoping report evaluated an offsite detour or a temporary bridge for maintenance of traffic.

Given the age of the structure, site constraints, hydraulics, and current conditions, the engineering study recommended a culvert slipliner with Aquatic Organism Passage (AOP) retrofits.

In addition to the liner, a beveled headwall will be constructed at the inlet in order to improve flow. To meet AOP requirements, baffles will need to be installed inside the culvert along with several rock weirs downstream to ensure the movement of aquatic species.

It is anticipated that the bridge will be constructed during the summer of 2023.

Traffic will be maintained through the existing VTRotue 103 corridor during construction.  Slight speed reductions may be used, and occasional short and minor delays may be experienced as construction vehicles enter and leave the project site.
