SHAFTSBURY BRIDGE BR#1
STP 014-1(6) Shaftsbury
REPLACEMENT OF BRIDGE NO. 1 ON VT-67 IN SHAFTSBURY.
The Shaftsbury Bridge 1 project will replace the existing bridge, which is in satisfactory condition and has substandard width and hydraulics with a new bridge that meets Vermont State Design Standards for width and improves the hydraulic capacity.
The existing structure is a single span concrete slab bridge constructed in 1934 and then later widened. It is approximately 20 feet in length and 30 feet wide. There is a laid up stone wingwall on the upstream western side that is failing. Additionally, there are areas of undermining and aggradation buidup along the abutments. The bridge is owned and maintained by the State of Vermont.
VTrans evaluated alternatives for replacement of the bridge in an engineering study completed in January 2018. The study assessed the proposed design criteria for the bridge and roadway alignment, right of way impacts, traffic impacts, utility impacts, and hydraulics. Several alternatives were considered including no action and several full bridge replacement options. Given the age, condition of the structure, and substandard hydraulics, the engineering study recommended a full bridge replacement with a 3-sided rigid frame.
The proposed structure will match the existing geometry in regards to vertical, and horizontal alignment and will be widened to meet the minimum standard typical section. The proposed structure will have two 11-foot travel lanes with 5-foot shoulders.
Traffic will be maintained on an offsite detour during a maximum 4 week bridge closure. The state detour route is as follows: VT Route 67, to VT Route 67A, VT Route 279, NY Route 7, NY Route 22, and NY Route 67, back to VT Route 67 (22.4 mi end-to-end).
