Replacement of Bridge no. 29 on US-2 in Richmond over I-89.
Project Location: Town of Richmond in Chittenden County on US Route 2 over Interstate 89. The bridge is located approximately 1.9 miles east from the junction with VT Route 117.
The Richmond Bridge 29 project will replace the existing 8-span bridge, which is in good to poor condition with a new 2-span off-alignment bridge that matches the width of the corridor.
The existing structure is an 8-span cast-in-place deck on rolled beams constructed in 1964. It is approximately 497 feet in length and 35 feet wide. The bridge substructure is in ‘poor’ condition while the deck and superstructure are in ‘good’ and 'fair' condition respectively. VTrans bridge inspectors have observed that the bridge joints are in poor condition and are allowing water to run onto the bearings and pier caps. As a result, the bearings have heavy rust scale and section loss and the pier columns and caps have extensive deterioration. The piers have large areas of spalled concrete with exposed reinforcing steel. The bridge is owned and maintained by the State of Vermont.
VTrans evaluated alternatives for rehabilitation or replacement of the bridge in an engineering study completed in April 2018. The study assessed the proposed design criteria for the bridge and roadway alignment, right of way impacts, traffic impacts, and utility impacts. Several alternatives were considered including no action, substructure rehabilitation, full bridge replacement with a steel beam bridge both on and off alignment, and full bridge replacement with a buried structure. Given the age, condition of the structure, and geometry of the structure, the engineering study recommended a full bridge replacement with a 2-span steel beam bridge off-alignment to the north of the existing bridge.
The new bridge will be widened to meet the current typical section of the corridor. This includes 6-foot shoulders and two 12-foot travel lanes.

Traffic will be maintained on the existing bridge during construction.
