ORLEANS VILLAGE BRIDGE BR#10

BF 0310(7) Barton BARTON ST.

REPLACE BR10 ON VT58 (BARTON ST.) IN ORLEANS VILLAGE, OVER THE BARTON RIVER.

Project Location: Village of Orleans in Orleans County on VT Route 58 over Barton River. The bridge is located approximately 0.4 miles east of the intersection of VT Route 58 and US Route 5.

The Orleans Village VT Route 58 Bridge 10 project will replace the existing historic bridge, which has a substandard horizontal and vertical alignment and bridge railing, and is considered structurally deficient. The existing bridge is a historic Concrete T-Beam bridge constructed in 1933. The existing bridge is 46-feet long and 48.5-feet wide. The deck is in poor condition and is considered structurally deficient.

VTrans evaluated alternatives for rehabilitation or replacement of Bridge 10 in an engineering study completed in February 2015. The study assessed the proposed design criteria for the bridge and roadway alignment, Right-of-Way impacts, hydraulics, and historic resources. Several alternatives were considered including no action, superstructure replacement, full bridge replacement On-alignment, and full bridge replacement Off-alignment. Given the age of the structure, site constraints, current condition and safety concerns with the current alignment, a full bridge replacement Off-alignment was chosen to be the preferred alternative. The new bridge will be constructed while maintaining traffic with alternating one-way traffic and phased bridge construction. It is expected that that there will be a couple of complete, short duration road closures of VT 58 for certain construction activities. Traffic will be maintained on signed State route and local detours during the road closures.

The horizontal alignment through the project area will be brought up to the current standard in order to improve site distance around the curve. The new bridge will feature two 11-foot travel lanes with 4-foot shoulders. The new bridge will have sidewalks on both sides in order to maintain the sidewalk network that currently exists. The bridge and roadway will feature railing that compliments the Orleans Village Historic District.

The construction schedule will be compressed as practicable to keep the VT 58 road closures to a minimum duration.

Location Map:  The State of Vermont will assist the Village of Orleans with signing recommendations to accommodate local traffic while an official State Route Detour will also be signed.
