BERLIN BRIDGE BR#3

BF 026-1(43) Berlin

Construction of a new bridge on existing alignment with related roadway and channel work.

Project Location: Town of Berlin in Washington County on US Route 302 over Stevens Branch. The bridge is located near the intersection of US Route 302 and Ames Drive.

This project will replace existing Bridge 3, which is in satisfactory to poor condition and has substandard width, hydraulics, and railings. The new bridge will meet the Vermont State Design Standards for width and bridge railing requirements and will maintain or improve the hydraulic capacity for water to flow by the bridge.

The existing structure is a single span cast-in-place deck on rolled beams constructed in 1928 and then widened in 1941. It is approximately 64 feet in length and 40 feet wide. The existing bridge rail has concrete parapets with tubular metal railing and a curb with slots. The bridge deck is in ‘poor’ condition while the superstructure and substructure are in ‘satisfactory’ condition. VTrans bridge inspectors have observed areas of heavy saturation, cracking, and efflorescence in the deck, which are evidence of significant concrete deterioration. The bridge is owned and maintained by the State of Vermont.

VTrans evaluated alternatives for rehabilitation or replacement of the bridge in an engineering study completed in January 2018. The study assessed the proposed design criteria for the bridge and roadway alignment, right of way impacts, traffic impacts, utility impacts, hydraulics and historical resources. Several alternatives were considered including no action, deck replacement, superstructure replacement, and full bridge replacement. Given the age, condition of the structure, and substandard geometry, the engineering study recommended a full bridge replacement.

The new bridge will be widened to 54.75' to meet the new typical section of the corridor. This includes two 8 foot shoulders for bicycles, two 11 foot travel lanes, and a middle 11 foot turning lane.  Phased construction will be used, building one side of the new bridge at a time while traffic is maintained on the other side. This eliminates the need for a costly and time consuming temporary bridge construction.  Pedestrain traffic will be maintained through the work zone in a defined path. A new sidewalk will be included on the new bridge. The connection of this sidewalk segment to the remainder of the planned sidewalk network will be completed on other projects.

Traffic will be maintained (one lane in each direction) thru the work zone.  Pedestrians will have a designated 4 ft wide path. Bicycle traffic will join the traffic in the 11 ft wide vehicle lanes. Existing GMT buses 80 and 89 are also available to cross the work zone.
