BRATTLEBORO BRIDGE BR#54

BF 2000(28) Brattleboro

REPLACE BRIDGE NO. 54 ON VT9 IN BRATTLEBORO, OVER WHETSTONE BROOK, WITH RELATED APPROACH AND CHANNEL WORK.

Project Location: Town of Brattleboro in Windham County on Town Highway 2 (VT Route 9/Western Ave) in the Town of Brattleboro within the West Brattleboro Urban Compact, approximately 0.9 miles west of the I-91 exit 2 interchange and just west of the intersection with Melrose Street.

The Brattleboro Bridge 54 project over the Whetstone Brook includes a full bridge replacement on the existing alignment.  The existing structure is a 60-foot long historic Single Span Cast-in-Place Concrete Arch constructed in 1914. The structure currently has a culvert rating of 6 (satisfactory).  Town Highway 2 (VT Route 9) is classified as a Class 1 Town Highway through the project area and is located on the National Highway System.

VTrans evaluated alternatives for rehabilitation or replacement of the bridge in an engineering study completed in August of 2021. Given the age of the structure, substandard width, site constraints and current conditions, the engineering study recommended a full bridge replacement with a new widened conventional bridge while maintaining traffic on a 2-way downstream temporary bridge with pedestrian accommodations.

The new bridge will have 11-foot-wide travel lanes with 8-foot-wide shoulders, resulting in a curb-to-curb width of 38-feet to match approach roadway width. Additionally, a 5-foot-wide sidewalk should be constructed on both the upstream and downstream sides of the new bridge to match the corridor.

It is anticipated that the bridge will be constructed during the summer of 2026.

2-way traffic will be maintained during construction.
