CALAIS BRIDGE BR#82

BHF 037-2(11) Calais

REPLACEMENT OF BRIDGE NO. 82 ON VT14 IN CALAIS, OVER KINGSBURY BRANCH.

Calais BHF 037-2(10): Bridge 74 is located on VT 14 approximately 5.2 miles north of the intersection with US2, just south of the intersection with Pekin Brook Rd, over Pekin Brook.

Calais BHF 037-2(11): Bridge 82 is located on VT 14 approximately 9.5 miles north of the intersection with US2, about 0.3 miles north of Balentine Rd., over Kingsbury Branch.

Calais BHF 037-2(12): Bridge 77 is located on VT 14 approximately 7.6 miles north of the intersection with US 2, over Kingsbury Branch _____________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Construction is complete for the above referenced State owned bridges on VT-14.

The existing bridges are concrete T-beam bridges built in the late 1910s - early 1920s and are nearing the end of their service lives. Bridges 74 was widened in the late 1970s. All the bridges are structurally deficient, with substandard and deteriorating bridge railings. All are substandard hydraulically, with inadequate area for water to flow under them, with 1 foot of clearance during a “design” storm event. Bridge 74 is scour-critical. Bridges 74 and 82 will be completely replaced. Bridge 77 will undergo a deck and superstructure replacement, while keeping the existing substructures, due to its better condition and relative stability for scour.

Not all roadway geometric standards will be able to be completely corrected, but improvements will be made. Due to geometric limitations, the hydraulic clearance standards can only be achieved on Bridge 82, but lane and shoulders widths will meet current standards on all bridges. Expected life of the new bridges will be 75 years for Bridges 74 and 82, and 40 years for the superstructure of Bridge 77.

Bridge 74 will receive a new steel beam and concrete deck superstructure, bridge 82 will receive a new precast concrete “NEXT” beam superstructure, and bridge 77 will receive a precast solid concrete slab superstructure. Bridges 74 and 82 will be founded on H-Pile deep foundations for scour resiliency while the superstructure for bridge 77 will be placed on the existing foundation.

The construction of these bridges will take place during construction seasons 2021 and 2022. Due to the lack of reasonable detours and bypasses, it is proposed that these projects be constructed in phases, keeping one lane of traffic open at each site, as the other lane is rebuilt. Construction of bridge 74 is complete. Bridges 77 and 82 are on track for construction during the 2022 construction season.

Traffic Maintenance: Each bridge will be constructed in phases, where one half the bridge is constructed at a time, while the other half remains open for traffic. It is expected that it will take an entire construction season to get all three done.
