Project Location: Town of Woodstock in Windsor County on TH 1 (FAS Route 166/Pomfret Road) over Gulf Stream. Bridge 1 is a town-owned bridge, located approximately 0.20 miles north of the junction with VT Route 12.

The Woodstock Bridge 1 project includes a deck replacement of the existing single span rolled beam bridge. The existing structure has a length of 84 feet and a width of 31 feet.  The structure currently has a deck rating of 5 (Fair), a superstructure rating of 7 (Good), and a substructure rating of 7 (Good).  The bridge was constructed in 1937, and reconstructed in 1973.  The existing reinforced concrete deck is only in fair condition with delaminations and saturation in areas along with a large spalled area with exposed rebar.  Additionally, the existing grated drains with downspouts are rusted and are leaking on the beams.

VTrans evaluated alternatives for the rehabilitation or replacement of the bridge in an engineering study completed in May of 2022. This study assessed the proposed design criteria for the structure, right-of-way, rare/threatened/endangered species impacts, and cultural resource impacts. Several alternatives were considered, including: no action, deck rehabilitation, deck replacement, superstructure replacement, and full bridge replacement. Maintenance of traffic options considered included an offsite detour, phased construction, or a temporary bridge.

Given the age of the structure, site constraints and current conditions, the engineering study recommended a deck replacement with traffic maintained on an offsite detour. The deck will include new joints at the begin and end bridge to reduce the amount of maintenance necessary for this structure in the future. A deck replacement will also include new bridge railing and pavement.

It is anticipated that the new deck will be constructed during the summer of 2025.
