LUDLOW VILLAGE BRIDGE BR#57

BO 1443(52) Ludlow

REPLACE EXISTING TRUSS BRIDGE NO. 57 ON TH324 (MILL ST.) IN LUDLOW VILLAGE WITH A PEDESTRIAN BRIDGE.

Project Location: Village of Ludlow in Windsor County on TH-324 (Mill Street) over the Black River.  The south end of the bridge is located at the intersection of Mill Street and TH-5 (Pleasant Street).

The Ludlow Bridge 57 project includes the removal of the historic one-lane pony truss and replacement with a pedestrian bridge.  The existing structure has been closed to traffic since 2007.  The existing structure is a 82-foot long single span Warren Pony Truss. The structure currently has a deck rating of 3 (serious), a superstructure rating of 2 (critical), and a substructure rating of 4 (poor). The bridge was constructed in 1929.

VTrans evaluated alternatives for disinvestment, rehabilitation, or replacement of the bridge in an engineering study completed in December, 2019. This study assessed the proposed design criteria for the structure, right-of-way, hydraulics, and community considerations. Several alternatives were considered, including: no action, disinvestment with or without a new pedestrian bridge, rehabilitation, and full bridge replacement on-alignment.

Given the age of the structure, site constraints, exsiting geometery, needs of the Town, and current conditions, the engineering study recommended a disinvestment of the structure and replacement with a new pedestrian bridge that improves the hydraulic condition at the crossing.

It is anticipated that the bridge will be constructed during the summer of 2024.  During the construction work, Pleasant St. will be closed to vehicular traffic.  Vehicular traffic can circumvent the site on any Town or State highways where traffic is normally allowed.  Pedestrian and bicycle traffic will not be closed on Pleasant St.

The bridge will continue to remain closed during construction.
