FAIRFIELD BRIDGE BR#49

BO 1448(46) Fairfield

REPLACEMENT OF BRIDGE NO. 49 ON TH29 IN FAIRFIELD, OVER BLACK CREEK.

Project Location: Town of Fairfield in Franklin County on TH 29 (Paradee Road) over Black Creek. Bridge 49 is a Town-owned bridge, located approximately 0.70 mile east of the junction with TH 1.

The Fairfield Bridge 49 project includes the replacement of the existing single span steal beam pony truss bridge. The existing structure has a length of 48 feet and a width of 14 feet. The structure currently has a deck rating of 6 (Satisfactory), a superstructure rating of 4 (Poor), and a substructure rating of 7 (Good).  This bridge was constructed in 1919, and reconstructed in 1995.  The bridge has needed replacement since 2018 due to heavy deterioration along the beam ends from sediment buildup and open grid steel deck. In 2020 there were stringer beams added to compensate for the failed stringer ends at abutment 2. During the annual inspection, it was discovered that the lateral bracing has significant sections of loss throughout and some failed members, and the stringers still have section loss in the older stringer ends and large perforations remaining in the abutment 2 beam ends.

VTrans evaluated alternatives for rehabilitation or replacement of the bridge in an engineering study completed in July, 2022.  This study assessed the proposed design criteria for the structure, right-of-way, cultural resource impacts, and hydraulics. Several alternatives were considered, including: no action, rehabilitation, a new pony truss, and a new conventional bridge on and off-alignment. The scoping report recommends a full bridge replacement with a new conventional type bridge.

It is anticipated that the bridge will be rehabilitated during the summer of 2025.

Traffic will be maintained on an offsite detour during construction.
