SPRINGFIELD BRIDGE BR#25N

IM 091-1(83) Springfield

Replace bridge decks on BR25 N&S; replace superstructure on BR26 N&S; remove BR27 N&S and relocate Toonerville Rail Trail to pass beneath BR 28 N&S; and replace BR28 N&S.

Project Location: Town of Springfield in Windsor County on Interstate 91 bridges 25 over US Route 5, bridges 26 over the Black River, bridges 27 over the Toonerville Rail Trail, and bridges 28 over US Route 5 at exit 7.

This project started out as a replacement project for Bridges 28 N&S which are two existing 4-span Rolled Beam bridges. Bridge 28N is 202-feet long and has a deck rating of 5 (Fair), superstructure rating of 5 (Fair), and substructure rating of 5 (Fair). Bridge 28S is 207-feet long and has a deck rating of 6 (Satisfactory), superstructure rating of 6 (Satisfactory), and substructure rating of 6 (Satisfactory). The existing structures have 12 foot travel lanes and 3 foot shoulders.  The bridges were constructed in 1965. This project was expanded to include bridges 25, 26, and 27 in order to take advantage of the temporary maintenance of traffic measures employed to construct bridges 28 and also reduce future construction impacts.

VTrans is currently evaluating the alternatives for bridges 25, 26, and 27. An engineering study is expected in March of 2022 immediatly followed by design abd permitting and construction in 2025.

Maintenance of Traffic: Interstate-91 traffic will be maintained during construction.
